Performances Workshops

"Every performance begins with a single breath. Everything that follows is shared." — Chōmei

An Invitation

Every performance is an invitation.

An invitation to slow down. To listen. To breathe. To experience a tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next for centuries.

For more than thirty years, the shakuhachi has been my companion in that pursuit. Every performance reflects not only the music itself, but also the philosophy, craftsmanship, history, and cultural traditions from which the instrument emerged.

Each performance becomes an opportunity to experience Japan through one of its most expressive and contemplative artistic traditions.

The Performance Experience

Before There Is Music,
There Is Silence.

Within that silence, performer and audience arrive together in the same moment. From that shared breath, the performance begins.

"The shakuhachi possesses a remarkable ability to transform the atmosphere of a space. Between the notes, silence itself becomes an active participant, inviting reflection, imagination, and attentive listening."

Beyond the Music

More Than Music

For me, a performance is never simply about presenting music. It is an opportunity to share a way of listening.

Throughout history, the shakuhachi has served not only musicians, but also monks, craftsmen, teachers, and seekers who understood that every breath offers an opportunity to cultivate greater awareness. That understanding continues to shape every performance I offer today.

Rather than asking an audience merely to listen to the music, I hope to invite them into the quiet space from which the music emerges. In that shared space, performance becomes experience.

Beyond the Concert Hall

Workshops & Lecture
Demonstrations

Interactive sessions introducing participants to the traditions, philosophy, and cultural significance of the shakuhachi — for audiences with or without previous musical experience.

Each workshop combines demonstration, discussion, and hands-on participation, allowing participants not only to hear the shakuhachi, but to experience many of the principles that have shaped its tradition for centuries. Adapted for schools, universities, cultural organizations, festivals, museums, corporate groups, and private events. Topics may include:

The Way of Breath Through Bamboo
Breath Awareness and Natural Breathing
History & Cultural Significance of the Shakuhachi
Traditional Japanese Aesthetics
Sound, Silence, and Listening
Bamboo as Instrument and Teacher
Introduction to Ji-Nashi Shakuhachi
Breath and Budō
Instrument Making and Craftsmanship
The Role of Awareness in Artistic Practice

Every workshop is tailored to the interests, experience, and objectives of the host organization and participants.

A Simple Belief

A Living Tradition

Traditional arts remain alive only when they continue to be practiced, understood, and shared.

Every performance, every workshop, and every conversation is an opportunity to respectfully transmit a tradition that has enriched my own life for more than three decades. Whether introducing the shakuhachi to someone for the very first time or performing for experienced listeners, my hope is always the same: that each person leaves with a deeper appreciation for breath, for attentive listening, and for the quiet harmony that exists within both music and everyday life.
